This is a photo of the "Bird's Nest" stadium, used for the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. It was used for track and field events as well as the opening and closing ceremonies to the games.
According to a story on NPR, it cost $480 M to build and an astonishing $11M /year to maintain. The problem is that since the Olympics ended four years ago, the Chinese have struggled to find any use for this iconic building, which seats 91,000 spectators. Lacking a Big 10 football program, there just isn't that much need for a such a large venue in Beijing, so the facility sits empty for months on end and slides slowly into disrepair.
And we thought our nest was empty!
Today I am grateful for the good health of my family.
